A scene from Total Recall

In 2013, at least 18 major prequels, sequels and remakes will hit theatres. One of the final home entertainment releases of 2012 demonstrates why we need to be cautious about how Hollywood recycles old ideas for new movies. Two words: Total Recall.

New to digital download as well as DVD and Blu-ray, Total Recall is a remake of the 1990 thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (which, in turn, was inspired by sci-fi novelist Philip K. Dick's short story). The 1990 flick was one of Schwarzenegger's better efforts outside of two of the Terminator films. It did not need a do-over.

Hollywood did it anyway, hiring Len Wiseman (of Underworld infamy) to direct. The new Total Recall generated $198 million in worldwide boxoffice, $63 million less than the original did in 1990 (and that is without adjusting for inflation). So audiences made their preference obvious.
