'Frankenweenie' makes history
By Bruce Kirkland, QMI Agency

A scene from the film Frankenweenie. (SUPPLIED)

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie is helping to make history in animation. It is one of three stop-action productions nominated for an Oscar in the best animated feature category.

The others are ParaNorman, a masterwork from the studio that gave us Coraline, and The Pirates! Band of Misfits, a cartoon hybrid of stop-action and digital animation. The other nominees from 2012 are Brave and Wreck-it-Ralph, both created by handmade drawings and computer animation.

I suspect Brave might win. If that happens, then Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit remains the only stop-action winner since this Oscar category was created in 2001.

But Frankenweenie captivates me, too. This is Burton at his best in this medium after The Nightmare Before Christmas with director Henry Selick and his collaboration with Mike Johnson on Corpse Bride. Also, I was on the Frankenweenie set in London to witness the painstaking process of stop-action animation.
